Surgeons’ Expanding Needs for Retinal Devices to Fuel Revenue Growth

April 26, 2017: By Katie Cannady

Retinal surgery uses more specialized products than any other ophthalmic surgical segment, resulting in annual revenues second only to cataract surgery. Market Scope expects steady growth in the global retinal device market over the next five years. The market is expected to total nearly $1.9 billion in 2017 and grow to almost $2.5 billion by 2022 at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6 percent.

Market Scope’s 2017 Retinal Surgical Devices Report analyzes the markets for vitrectomy machines, dedicated machine packs, vitrectomy surgical accessories (retinal and cautery instruments, illuminator consoles and probes, cryosurgical devices, scleral buckles, ocular gases, ocular dyes, and silicone oil), photocoagulation lasers, general single-use devices, artificial vision retinal implants and AMD telescope IOLs.

Over the next five years, several factors will spur market growth: an increase in the elderly population and age-related retinal diseases associated with this population group, a significant increase in the number of diabetic retinopathy patients, more doctors trained to perform retinal surgery, safer and more effective surgical device technologies, improving health care systems in emerging countries, and higher expectations of patients for vision improvement. Newer retinal pharmaceutical therapies will provide alternatives to surgery in some instances and mitigate these retinal device-based trends, but surgical intervention will often be used with pharmaceuticals in the future.

Market Scope estimates that approximately 54 firms manufacture or develop retinal surgical devices worldwide. The market is dominated by three companies that collectively account for nearly two-thirds of global revenues: Alcon, Bausch + Lomb, and DORC. Combined, their estimated revenues for 2017 are expected to total $1.1 billion.
