Second SightSecond Sight reported Aug. 7 that doctors implanted 17 Argus II Retinal Prosthesis Systems in Q2-2018 and the company posted $1.9 million in revenues.

The total was down from Q2-2017, when the Sylmar, California, firm reported $2.2 million in sales and 19 Argus II implantations.

The company posted $1 million in sales and 16 implantations in Q1-2018.

CMS reimbursement for the Argus II continues to fluctuate, with the agency recently proposing a reimbursement of $137.5 thousand for 2019.

The 2016 rate was $95 thousand, which jumped to $150 thousand in 2017 but fell to $122.5 thousand in 2018.

Will McGuire, president and CEO of Second Sight, said the company is directing its energy toward its Orion cortical prosthesis, which is now its top priority.

McGuire said, “With respect to our ongoing Argus commercial and clinical efforts, we will prioritize activities that maximize our return on investment or have strategic value.”
