Vital Tears announced Nov. 7 that it has added mobile phlebotomy services to its system of providing autologous serum tears for dry eye disease.
Autologous serum tears combine a patient’s own blood serum with a sterile, preservative-free solution to create a tear substitute customized to the patient.
The therapy is gaining in acceptance as a treatment for severe dry eye patients, but the cost and logistics of processing the tears have been considered prohibitive.
Vital Tears of Kansas City, Missouri, a joint venture of Stephens Instruments and Saving Sight, introduced in 2015 its system for producing, delivering, and billing autologous serum tears.
The new mobile service allows patients to have their blood drawn at their home or office, Vital Tears said.
“Our goal is to provide a game changing hassle-free and convenient experience from start to finish,” said Rajan Shukla, vice president of strategy at Vital Tears. “We want to remove barriers that have traditionally existed to easy access of serum tears.”
