Johnson & Johnson has lowered the price for the activators used in the TearScience LipiFlow treatment to $100, according to Darrell E. White, MD, in a blog post Feb. 18 on Healio.
The LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System is designed to liquefy obstructed meibum in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) by heating the eyelids and applying a gentle, massaging pressure. The system consists of a console and a single-use sterile activator.
J&J acquired TearScience in September 2017.
White said it is the first price change since former TearScience CEO Joe Boorady announced a 50 percent cut in 2016, which brought the price to $175 from $350.
White, founder of Skyvision Centers in Ohio, said TearScience/J&J “has now put in place a pricing structure that will allow what is arguably the most effective MGD treatment to be used in a much more effective manner.”
He said he expects LipiFlow use to increase across a range of practices.
