German company Carl Zeiss Meditec reported Aug. 24 that it had become the first medical device manufacturer to introduce in the CE market the treatment of hyperopia using lenticule extraction. This includes patients with or without astigmatism.
Zeiss also announced that its SMILE and SMILE Pro lenticule extraction procedures combined had surpassed the 10 million procedure mark.
SMILE, short for small-incision lenticule extraction, is performed using Zeiss’ VisuMax femtosecond laser. It became commercially available in 2011.
SMILE topped 8 million procedures in August 2023.
The company said it would be showcasing all its latest technologies at the 2024 ESCRS congress in Barcelona, Spain.
